Renee’s background includes a BA in Political Science from San Jose State University and a MA in Counseling Psychology from Lesley College. Starting with work dating all the way back to when she was in high school and college, Renee worked in many restaurants. She felt it was important to mention this as we often start with our “professional” work histories, but many of her values are deeply connected to her experience and who she knew when doing work for minimum wages. Out of college Renee worked on a couple of political campaigns where she realized the kind of impact she wanted to have in the world was more direct, and she became a social worker. She worked with victims of Intimate Partner Violence at what was then the Boulder County Safehouse, the teen centers at Attention Homes, a women’s halfway house, and the Boulder County Addiction Recovery Center.
During her non-profit work she worked both with clients and in grant writing and fundraising. Her career change in 2000 was attributed to both a growing interest in the financial side of things and life change of having a baby. She began at Trilogy Financial Services in Denver, CO. In 2004, she left to create an independent RIA firm Better World Investments which she grew and established herself as an expert in the field regarding issues related to mass incarceration and racial justice, including divestment from private prisons. Her outside interests are reflected in that work being heavily involved in organizations dedicated to racial justice and equity, as well as all human rights. The daughter she changed careers for is now 17 and about to embark on her adult life as she looks towards college and is still a central part of Renee’s life.
