As investment adviser representatives of First Affirmative, Ken Jacobs, CFP® and Renee Morgan provide full service financial planning to individuals, small businesses, and non-profits. Services include a full assessment of your financial goals, designing investment and other strategies to meet these, and ongoing assistance to monitor your progress.
Ken and Renee are full service Financial Planners. They work with clients to first develop a plan, and then invest wisely to meet their financial goals in a manner consistent with their personal social and environmental values.
Elements of a financial plan may include retirement, estate planning, protection (i.e., insurance), education, budgeting, debt management, and other financial needs, as well as investment advice and management. They consider all aspects of how you view, value, and handle your money and wealth, such as career expectations, how you spend and invest your money, and how you will leave a legacy.
By discussing whichever of these aspects of your financial life are of priority to you, we can develop an accurate understanding of your needs, and a comfortable, valuable, and lasting working relationship.
“Our clients include a very diverse range of individuals and families. It makes our work more fun!”
Small Businesses and Non-Profits
Ken and Renee, doing business as Sustainable World Financial Advisors, work with small business owners who share their commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. If you own a small business, you know that you’ve invested your heart and soul, as well as your money. You know that you face additional risks and challenges. You also know you have a very special opportunity to positively impact your own circumstances, those of your employees, and the community at large. Ken and Renee assist small business owners with many aspects of their planning, whether they fall within the purview of the business itself, or their personal situation. In particular, we offer retirement plans to employers that enable them to align their investments with their values, mission, and specific business situation.
“As a small business owner ourselves, we recognize that your business is likely your biggest and most important asset! Businesses committed to sustainable and responsible practices have tremendous opportunities to prosper and have a positive impact in their communities.”
Similarly, we work with nonprofit organizations, as fiduciaries, to help them and their employees manage their assets, and to provide employee retirement plans consistent with the organization’s mission and values. Working with non-profits also keeps us connected to the social and environmental issues they address, and to give back to the communities that together we serve. We also provide one-on-one assistance to the individual employees of our small business and non-profit clients.
Asset Management & Allocation
As Investment Advisor Representatives of First Affirmative Financial Network, we offer First Affirmative’s broad array of sustainable, responsible impact investment options. First Affirmative has led the way in sustainable investing for over 25 years. It continues to innovate to deliver its models at an affordable cost, optimal performance, and maximum social impact. Ken and Renee work with First Affirmative to tailor your portfolio to meet your personal financial priorities. 1
“Our approach is NOT one size fits all. Using both questionnaires and conversation, we will tailor your account(s) to correspond with your own:
Social and Environmental Values
These can be quite general, or very specific to certain issues, quite strict or simply recognize that in any given industry some companies are more progressive that others. For example, you might choose to emphasize renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and companies that include women and minorities on their boards and senior management team. Or you might choose to exclude companies engaged in fossil fuel production, with poor labor practices, or that have other detrimental environmental impacts. In some instances, we are even able to exclude individual companies of your choosing from your investment account.
Similarly, we also tailor your investments to match your investment objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon.
Risk Tolerance and Time Horizon:
If you intend to invest your assets for many years, then normally we find that you can tolerate more risk as the ups and downs of the market will tend to even out over time. Some of your assets may be for retirement and others for shorter term goals. However, some people’s individual sensibilities may come into play and override a simple time horizon assessment. We work with both bungee jumpers and those who look both ways before crossing a one way street.
Once we fully understand your objectives, we develop an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) to govern the portfolio. FEES ARE CLEARLY AND EXPLICITLY EXPLAINED. Mutual funds, Exchange Traded Funds (EFT’s), separate account managers using individual stocks and bond folios, community investment notes, and other types of investments may be included in your portfolio. We will clearly explain our recommended investment strategy before it is implemented. First Affirmative then manages your account with discretion, but based upon your agreed upon IPS. First Affirmative also votes your proxies in accordance with its proxy voting guidelines.
Reporting & Monitoring
You will have 24/7 online access to account information. In addition, First Affirmative provides quarterly performance reports. We will work together with you to monitor the performance of your account. We will meet with you periodically to discuss your progress, and to identify any changes in your situation that might warrant changes in your portfolio. We will integrate this conversation with any implications for meeting the objectives identified in your Financial Plan. We will always be available to answer any questions you may have.
How We Get Paid
We get paid in one of two ways. We either charge an hourly rate for planning services or we get paid an agreed upon percentage of assets under management. These fees are an annual rate but are assessed on a quarterly or monthly basis. In addition, if insurance is a part of your plan we receive commissions. Insurance business is not supervised by First Affirmative nor is any compensation for insurance sales shared with First Affirmative.
You will always know what fees you are paying. If these aren’t entirely clear, just ask.
The first step in the planning process is to pick up the phone and give us a call to schedule a face to face complementary consultation (303-278-3886). Or go to our Contact Us page and email us.
During our first consultation, we develop a general understanding of what your goals are and explore how we can be of assistance. We will describe how we would work with you, and answer any questions you might have about who we are and what we do.
If we’re a good fit for each other, the first consultation normally ends with our agreeing on the scope of our work, and we will give you a brief homework assignment for our next meeting. Your homework will involve assembling information about you, your income, expenses, investments, debts and other circumstances that can serve as the basis for our further work. We’ll also discuss how we get paid.
At our second meeting, we will go over what you’ve assembled, again answer any questions you might have, and begin a thorough conversation about your goals and values, to enable us to begin the planning process in earnest.
